Family Medicine Residency

Welcome to the best of military family medicine! The National Capital Consortium Family Medicine Residency at Alexander T. Augusta (A.T. Augusta) Military Medical Center, formerly Fort Belvoir Community Hospital, is the military’s first and only tri-service family medicine training program. Prior to becoming a joint program in 2007, it was originally one of the oldest family medicine residencies in the Army. Initially established in 1973 and with more than 250 graduates, the residency sets the benchmark for excellence in family medicine education.

Structured as an unopposed 15-15-15 program, the residency currently trains six Army, four Air Force and five Navy residents in each class. The program is sponsored by the National Capital Consortium at the Uniformed Services University and is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.

Serving a regional population of more than 250,000 beneficiaries, A.T. Augusta Military Medical Center has a robust obstetrical service, newborn nursery, inpatient service, ICU, subspecialty consultant services and outpatient clinics. Family Medicine alone cares for more than 25,000 empanelled patients providing more than 4,000 visits each month.

As the only residency in the hospital, residents are directly involved in all aspects of their patient’s care. Inova Fairfax Hospital, one of the nation’s top-20 hospitals, augments the training experiences of our residents with rotations in critical care, emergency medicine, trauma medicine, and pediatrics. In addition, the residency sponsors the military’s only joint Family Medicine-Sports Medicine Fellowship program.

A.T. Augusta Military Medical Center opened as Fort Belvoir Community Hospital in 2011 and is a joint-service healthcare network providing world-class medical healthcare to the nations wounded, active-duty service members, retirees and family members. The hospital is designed to increase inpatient and outpatient care for service members and veterans in the National Capital Region.
