Public Health Nursing

Public Health Nursing mitigates population-focused disease and injury, assures Force Health Protection, and responds to emerging health threats to promote health and readiness.

Major Program Areas

Epidemiology and Disease Surveillance

  • Analysis of data
  • Communicable disease/reportable event investigation, reporting, and surveillance
  • Outbreak investigation
  • Epidemiological investigations and guidance on treatment/management of affected population
  • Serves as liaison to the Virginia Department of Health, local county health departments, and area military public health entities in the National Capital Region as it relates to communicable diseases/reportable events.

HIV Program Coordinator & Sexually Transmitted Disease Counseling/Education

  • All clients diagnosed with HIV and/or STI infection are to be referred to Public Health Nursing by the diagnosing/treating provider.
  • APHN completes risk assessments, provides risk reduction counseling, conducts contact interviews, and follows up if necessary. Army Public Health Nursing (APHN) ensures required reporting is completed per federal, state, and local guidelines, and facilitates partner notification.
  • APHN provides case management for all active duty soldiers, and ensures notification to leaders for any non-compliant service members.

Latent Tuberculosis Infection (LTBI) Surveillance and Treatment Clinic

  • Educates beneficiaries with reactive tuberculin skin tests and positive QuantiFERON
  • Provides surveillance and treatment of latent TB infection for beneficiaries over age 18
  • Provides TB clearance letters for work and school
  • Provides evaluation of previous positive TB tests for treatment per CDC guidelines
  • Conducts interviews for beneficiaries concerned about a TB exposure
  • Works with ATAMMC Infectious Disease Clinic and local health departments
  • Welcomes self-referrals

Health Promotion & Wellness

  • Annual influenza vaccine campaign
  • Community Health Status Assessment (CHSA) report
  • ATAMMC Staff Fitness and Wellness Program
  • Health promotion outreach to beneficiaries and via health fairs
  • National health observance events
  • Healthy living/education classes for Child, Youth, and School Services (CYSS), DoD/DA agencies and community groups
  • News articles on health related topics
  • Performance Triad Campaign
  • Participation on the retiree council and community health promotion council

Health Consultant for Child, Youth, and School Services (CYSS) & Multidisciplinary Inclusion Action Team (MIAT)

  • Serves as a health consultant to garrison CYSS programs
  • Conducts inspections of CYSS centers and family child cares to ensure safety and compliance
  • Provides education & training for CYSS staff
  • Advises and develop action plans for Multidisciplinary Inclusion Action Team meetings
  • Advises and reports communicable disease clusters and/or outbreaks
  • Interfaces with civilian health care providers, hospitals, and local community health departments
