Dr. Pramvir S. Verma: Advancing Cancer Treatment through Clinical Trials at A.T. Augusta Military Medical Center

By Reese Brown

(March 23, 2026)-- Recognized for his exceptional contributions to oncology, Dr. Pramvir S. Verma, Chief of the Hematology and Oncology department at the Alexander T. Augusta Military Medical Center (ATAMMC), and is also the 2024 recipient of the Col. Peter J. Weina Award for Excellence in Research, and was previously named “Researcher of the Year”. This prestigious title emphasizes the importance of clinical trials and the significant role they play in advancing cancer treatment.

In a recent interview, Dr. Verma shared insights into his background, his role at ATAMMC, and the transformative impact of clinical trials for patients battling cancer.

Q: Dr. Verma, can you tell us a bit about your background?

"I grew up in a military family, living in various states such as Maryland, Texas, and Colorado," said Dr. Verma. He completed his internal medicine residency and hematology/oncology fellowship training at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, concluding in 2007. Dr. Verma's service as an army oncologist included roles at Womack Army Medical Center and Eisenhower Army Medical Center, as well as deployment during Operation Iraqi Freedom, for which he received the Bronze Star. After leaving active duty, he transitioned into oncology practice and now leads ATAMMC's clinical trial program.

Q: What does conducting clinical trials at ATAMMC mean to you?

Dr. Verma emphasized the collective effort involved in clinical research: "The focus belongs to the supporting physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and most importantly, the brave patients who participate in trials and inspire us daily. We strive to pursue a future where cancer is manageable, and our ongoing research plays a crucial role in achieving that goal."

Q: Can you describe the current research initiatives at ATAMMC?

"At ATAMMC, we have launched three lung cancer clinical trials targeting various stages of the disease, along with studies for advanced breast cancer and multiple myeloma," he explained. Dr. Verma added that ongoing research is essential for uncovering innovative treatment options. "Clinical trials serve as the testing ground for new therapies, allowing us to evaluate their safety and effectiveness. Without these trials, potentially life-saving treatments may never reach those in need."

Q: How do clinical trials contribute to cancer prevention and patient care?

"Clinical research fosters continuous improvement in cancer management," Dr. Verma noted. "We explore ways to detect cancer earlier for better prognoses, while also assessing treatment regimens to optimize patient outcomes and minimize side effects. Our trials provide patients with access to the latest therapies, giving them hope when standard treatments have been exhausted."

Dr. Verma also acknowledged the collaborative nature of clinical research, stating, "By sharing data and expertise, researchers can accelerate progress in cancer care. These partnerships lead to more effective and personalized treatment options."

In Summary: "Oncology clinical research is the engine driving progress," Dr. Verma asserted. "As we continue to invest in clinical trials, we're moving closer to a future where cancer is no longer a death sentence but a treatable condition."

As Dr. Verma and his team at ATAMMC continue to push boundaries in oncology research, the medical center reaffirms its commitment to improving cancer care and providing hope to patients battling this formidable disease.
