Residential Treatment Facility

Fort Belvoir Community Hospital’s Directorate of Behavioral Health is home to the Residential Treatment Facility (RTF). This facility is a medically managed, 20-bed inpatient, voluntary program for the treatment of substance use disorders. The RTF program offers a comprehensive range of inpatient treatment services to support Department of Defense service members and their families.

Treatment services are available in accordance with operational priorities at the time of referral for active duty, activated reserve, dependent family members, and retirees. The RTF primarily serves the National Capital Region, but can accept referrals from within CONUS and OCONUS facilities.

The Residential Treatment Facility has a rolling admissions policy and is structured around a core treatment program of 28 days. Referrals can be submitted by any licensed health care provider. For more specific referral information and/or to request a referral packet please contact the RTF at 571-231-4689 or send an encrypted email to dha.belvoir.fbch.mbx.rtf-admissions@health.mil.

While the in-patient treatment program focuses on substance use disorders, it is necessary to understand that patients may also be experiencing difficulties or problems in other areas. The state-of-the-art RTF utilizes a multidisciplinary approach, delivered by licensed health professionals, drawing upon the disciplines of medicine, psychiatry, nursing, psychology, social work, and counseling, and integrating experiential therapists, substance abuse counselors, and 12-step program components.

The RTF’s premier services and comprehensive programs assist patients, who have been using substances (e.g., alcohol, benzodiazepines, meth/amphetamines, sedatives, opiates, cannabis, nicotine, over-the-counter and prescription medicines, et al), to address key aspects of their substance use, to better understand themselves, and to change their lifestyle to improve their opportunity for recovery.

The in-patient facility aims to restore wellness, facilitate rehabilitation, and promote better health practices, in an environment separated from day-to-day stressors. The RTF enhances the recovery process with an open, patient-centric residential therapeutic milieu in which patients are supported to address their addictions and any personal issues that contribute to and/or arise from substance use.

In addition to the medical and nursing care offered, the following therapeutic services are also provided:

  • Group therapy
  • Psychoeducational groups
  • Individual therapy
  • Family therapy
  • Experiential (art & recreational) therapy
  • Milieu (unit environment) therapy
  • Medication management
  • Psychological assessment / testing
  • Spirituality
  • Self-help groups
  • PT

The comprehensive process of treatment depends upon the concerned and caring interactions between staff and patients to promote emotional and physical wellbeing. Respect for the rights and beliefs of the patient is a cornerstone in the facilities Culture of Excellence. Emphasis is placed on the strengths of the patient and on his/her growth potential, with the patient an active participant in his/her own care and progress. The RTF believes that the treatment process is not limited to the hospital environment, but rather it extends to the patient’s personal, relational, social, recreational, and occupational world. This comprehensive look at the whole-person patient and his/her treatment process is why the Residential Treatment Facility at Fort Belvoir Community Hospital understands the importance of and encourages the involvement by Command, friends, and family in the patient’s recovery.
